Maximise Rehab was started by Carla Dixon, who is a Chartered Physiotherapist with a specialist interest in neurology - more specifically stroke rehabilitation and Parkinson's Disease, but she also has 20 years experience in various fields of rehabilitation. After many years of working in the NHS, Carla wanted to offer more to those wanting bespoke, long term rehabilitation and set up a service designed to meet their movement needs, without the restrictions of waiting lists and limited access to therapy. She offers a number of different routes to access cost-effective therapy.
Carla has been a Chartered Physiotherapist for 20 years. She graduated from the University of Hertfordshire with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy and went on to work in a number of different areas of medicine, gaining valuable knowledge about rehabilitation from every patient she worked with. Carla has worked in both inpatient (hospital ward) environments, out-patient clinics and with community teams, working within patients homes. Carla has been interested in the field of neurology for many years and currently works part-time for a community neurology team within the NHS. Her passion is stroke rehabilitation and neuroplasticity, helping patients to relearn movement and assisting them to achieve their goals. Carla spends a lot of her own time (and money!) attending courses, webinars and reading books and journal articles to help her become a better therapist, and stay up to date with the latest research on rehabilitation.
Carla is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (MCSP), HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) and ACPIN (Association of Chartered Physiotherapists Interested in Neurology).
Maximise Rehab is a mobile service. Treatment is provided at a location most convenient for you. For most patients this will be at home. This means you don't even have to leave the house and makes treatment accessible to all levels of ability. Alternatively, if you are working on goals related to your hobbies or workplace, we can also meet you there. For example, if you wanted advice about returning to your local gym after your stroke, we could meet you there to help you set up your new programme.
Evidence based practice means Carla uses treatment techniques that have been shown to be effective in research studies. This includes reading journals, attending courses and webinars, and lots of other ways to keep up with changes in the field of rehabilitation.
Not all treatment techniques work for everyone, as everyone's condition and potential is different. Carla draw's on years of experience of working with hundreds of patients who have been through the recovery process and combine this with the current theory on how to best retrain movement. Carla understands that your recovery has to be personalised to your needs and that each recovery journey will be slightly different. We have the skills to work with everyone affected by a number of conditions, from those who are bed bound with very little movement, to those working on skills such as higher level balance activities, to making plans to return to their jobs or hobbies, and everyone in between!
We have a number of ways to make your treatment affordable. We ALWAYS try to empower you with the skills to self manage your programmes. This is the most cost-effective way to recover. However, some people prefer to have regular contact with their physiotherapist and work better/are more motivated when they have that regular input. You can choose if you want that input to come from Carla on a regular basis (you choose how oftern) or whether you prefer to self manage a prescribed programme to keep costs down.
Maximise Rehab is also able to offer treatment virtually. We use Clinic.co - it works by Carla sending a link to your chosen device and conducting the session via video link. In the current climate this allows Carla to offer therapy without the risk of a face to face contact. But it can also be used for patients who are too far away for face to face therapy to be practical/affordable. It can also be used to supplement face to face visits as a way of maintaining contact with your therapist/maintain motivation but at half the cost. See our Cost/Price page for details. Sessions are priced according to time.
Some patients have reported finding telerehab (having to concentrate on a screen) quite fatiguing compared to face to face visits - for those affected, 2 shorter sessions may work better than one longer session.
We do not record our telerehab sessions. Sessions are documented just like a face to face visit in your treatment record.
Your treatment plan will be tailored to your specific needs. A 'blended' approach is often the most cost-effective, combining face to face visits from both the physiotherapist and/or virtual appointments. Of course, you have 100% choice in how your recovery is delivered, and this will be discussed not only on initial assessment but also throughout your journey as your needs change. You are completely in control of how and when you want treatment, and you can stop/start treatment at any time.
We pride ourselves on being 100% honest with our patients. We do believe that everyone is capable of some level of improvement but this is dependent on a number of factors. Setting realistic goals is important to manage your expectations - Carla will assist you with goal setting after your assessment and make sure you have the best chance of achieving your goal whilst being honest about possible barriers to your recovery. If you have questions about your recovery, Carla will discuss your needs honestly.
Good communication is key to a successful therapy relationship. If Carla needs to change an appointment, she will contact you asap. Carla can also keep other people updated about your therapy (with your consent) if you wish us to (e.g. family). Carla sometimes needs to speak to your GP on your behalf - this will be discussed with you first as you have to give your consent.
